LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The Great Lawn at Waterfront Park will be renamed because of a new sponsorship.

The TurfMutt Foundation will rededicate the green space near the Ohio River after a $1 million, 10-year sponsorship. A dedication and unveiling will be held at 6:40 a.m. Oct. 16 before the Mulligan 5K Run & Walk.

"Supporting revitalized green spaces is the next evolutionary step of TurfMutt’s education efforts around the benefits and importance of family yards, parks, gardens, and natural habitats," Kris Kiser, president and CEO of the TurfMutt Foundation, said in a news release. "We encourage all cities to embrace green space as a keystone amenity in their communities."

TurfMutt launched its education program to promote the benefits of managed landscape 15 years ago. According to a news release, TurfMutt has become a global education platform, reaching more than 70 million students, teachers and families.

Waterfront Park has more than 2.4 million people visit the area each year, along with hosting over 300 or more events.

"We are grateful for this tremendous partnership with the TurfMutt Foundation, which comes at a very special time as we celebrate the 25th anniversary of Waterfront Park," Deborah Bilitski, president of Waterfront Park, said in a news release. "The TurfMutt Foundation’s commitment to stewardship of green spaces for the benefit of all will help to ensure the newly renamed TurfMutt Foundation Great Lawn continues to be one of our city’s crown jewels and that Waterfront Park remains beautiful, welcoming, and accessible to everyone."
