LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Waterfront Park just got a boost for its new educational play area.

The PNC Foundation is providing a $150,000 grant for the creation of the PlayPort, which is part of the project to expand Waterfront Park to Louisville's west end.

This month, crews are currently working on the 1st phase of the West Louisville Waterfront Expansion Project.

It will be the first free and accessible outdoor play destination, and serve as a resource for STEM learning for kids in partnership with the Kentucky Science Center.

The 3-acre play area will have large-scale construction equipment, and river-themed artifacts for learning and playing.

Construction is already underway on the PlayPort, which is expected to be finished later this year.

According to a news release, the grant from PNC will go toward the development of "content-rich curriculum to optimize the outdoor play experience for PlayPort visitors." Officials said that curriculum will "come to life through a series of interactive signs, including graphics, educational content and prompts for hands-on exploration, as well as QR codes that will connect visitors to Kentucky Science Center-produced videos, designed to showcase STEM concepts and guide families through activities."

The $50 million expansion project will extend Waterfront Park into the city's west end along the Ohio River to a 22-acre area between 10th and 14th streets.
