LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville-based Humana Inc. cut a "small" but unspecified number of jobs this week, a company spokesman confirmed.

"Earlier this week, Humana did announce some limited workforce reductions. The impacted positions represented a small percentage of our total workforce and were geographically dispersed across multiple locations," Humana spokesman Mark Taylor told WDRB News in an email.

Taylor did not specify the number of job reductions or departments affected.

Humana, a Fortune 50 health insurer specializing in Medicare plans, employed about 67,100 nationwide as of a year ago, according to a regulatory report. The company has said greater Louisville contains its largest concentration of employees, about 10,000.

Humana just wrapped up its busiest time of the year from October to December, when the company competes with other Medicare Advantage plan sponsors to attract customers for the upcoming year.

Humana is also undergoing a leadership transition, with CEO-in-waiting Jim Rechtin joining the company as president earlier this week and longtime CEO Bruce Broussard planning to step away later in 2024.

Affected employees said they were given 60 days’ notice to explore other job options within the company and severance following termination based on their years of service.

"I was quite surprised," said a Louisville-based technology employee who was told his position was being eliminated on Thursday.

The employee spoke on the condition of anonymity for fear of violating terms of the severance payments.
