Last Sears department store in Louisville closing after company files for bankruptcy

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The last Sears department store in Louisville is set to close.

The location at the Jefferson Mall in Okolona will shut down by year's end, according to CNN.

The news was announced Monday after the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

Several other Louisville-area Sears and Kmart stores have also closed in recent years.

The business began as a mail order catalog in the 1880s.

Sears Holdings operates both Sears and Kmart stores and will close 142 unprofitable stores close to the end of the year. Liquidation sales are expected to begin soon. This is in addition to the closure of 46 unprofitable stores that had already been announced.

As of May, there were fewer than 900 Sears stores, which is down from a 2012 peak of 4,000 stores.

There's no word yet on exactly when the Jefferson Mall location will close.
