LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville's Alcoholic Beverage Control has posted signs at two Bardstown Road bars in an effort to restrict their liquor licenses to prevent the sale of alcohol after midnight. Â
ABC confirmed it had referred Afrokanza and Café 360 to code enforcement.
The Nuisance and Abatement signs were posted Tuesday night at both bars. The signs encourage the owners to meet with Metro Government on how to address ongoing criminal conduct.
ABC said it has substantiated complaints of violations at both locations.Â
"Following months-long investigations, Metro ABC has substantiated complaints of a disorderly premises and other violations made against Afrokanza and Café 360," ABC Director Brad Silveria said in an emailed statement. "We have referred these cases to Code Enforcement to ensure both establishments comply with local regulations."
CafĂ© 360 voluntarily gave up its extended liquor license for a six-month period a few days after a fatal shooting there in March, after ABC asked for an emergency suspension of the bar's liquor license.Â
There was also a triple shooting near the neighboring bars last July where a man was killed.
Those shootings led city leaders to make a push for more local control over liquor licenses when there is a violent incident at a business.Â
In March, Metro Council's Public Safety Committee unanimously passed an ordinance that would give ABC the authority to suspend a liquor license immediately after a shooting at a business.Â
Under the new ordinance, a business owner where a violent act happened would get an ABC hearing within three business days. Blackwell said there is room for discretion in the ordinance, but the intent is to look at threats to public safety and protect customers.
The ordinance would only apply to Metro ABC, and not cities within Jefferson County who have their own agency.
