LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Publix is officially coming to the Highlands.
In a news release, Publix Super Markets announced it signed a lease for a new Louisville store in the space formerly occupied by Mid City Mall.
"We are excited to continue our growth across Louisville with a new location in the Highlands," Publix media relations manager Jared Glover said in a news release. "We look forward to serving our new customers soon."
Publix at Mid City Market will feature a 54,948-square-foot supermarket and an adjacent 3,200-square-foot Publix Liquors.
The store will employ 150 employees.
Branch Properties will transform the mall into Mid City Market. Plans feature five new buildings, including Publix. The Heine Brothers Coffee and Raising Cane's locations along Bardstown Road will remain. Plans also include more green space and increased pedestrian walkways, with a 25% reduction in parking — more than 100 spaces.
Several businesses within Mid City Mall already closed or moved. Ramen House Louisville moved to a location on Spring Street, and The Nearly New Shop also closed in September 2025. The iconic Back Door Bar closed in May 2024 after the passing of longtime owner John Dant. Baxter Avenue Theatres closed at the end of 2025, citing the uncertain future of Mid City Mall. In June, the ValuMarket closed its doors after 21 years in the Highlands.
The Bardstown Road/Baxter Avenue Overlay Committee approved the design and a demolition request for Mid City Market in April. An official demolition date has not yet been announced.
This would be the fifth Publix location in Louisville. The company opened multiple stores locally in recent years and has an additional location planned along Blankenbaker Parkway.
An opening time frame for Publix has not been determined.
