Kentucky State Police said troopers responded to a two-vehicle crash on KY 55 Bypass near the intersection with Pelham Branch Road in Adair County at 4:30 p.m.

According to KSP, 46-year-old Joel Hammack of Crossville, Tennessee, was driving south in a Ford F150 and was speeding. Hammack then came upon a "slower-moving" Kia Sorento. Hammack rear-ended the car and the crash caused the Sorento off the roadway and it overturned.

The driver of the Sorento and another juvenile passenger were taken to the hospital for minor injuries.

Hammack and a passenger in his truck, 45-year-old Walter Nichols, were treated and released.

KSP said Hammack was arrested and charged with vehicular homicide under the influence of alcohol, DUI 4th offense or greater, three counts of assault.

When firsts responders arrived on scene, Nichols was "unruly" and then arrested and charged with assault 3rd degree (EMS, Fire, Rescue Squad), assault 4th degree (minor injury), terroristic threatening, disorderly conduct and alcohol intoxication in a public place, according to KSP.
