LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A 33-year-old man was identified as the victim of an "accidental" fatal shooting earlier this month in Louisville's Shawnee neighborhood.

Louisville Metro Police were called at 9:36 p.m. May 1 to the 600 block of South 38th Street on a reported shooting, department spokesperson Dwight Mitchell said.

When officers arrived, they found a man who had been shot. Police said he died at the scene.

The Jefferson County Coroner's Office identified the victim Tuesday as Tyler Wall.

Mitchell said the man was shot by a "known" suspect who fled the scene but surrendered to police shortly after and is in custody.

The suspect was identified as 27-year-old Jared Fields. He's charged with manslaughter. According to an arrest citation, he called 911 after the shooting while officers were still on the scene.

After his arrest, Fields told police the victim was his friend and the shooting was accidental. Police said he told them the two were talking about the handgun Fields had bought. The victim was shot when Fields, "believing the handgun was unloaded," pointed the gun toward the victim and pulled the trigger.

Police said a witness at the scene told them there was no argument or altercation between Fields and the victim before the shooting. The witness told police they had just walked to the front door of the home when they heard the gunshot and found the victim.

LMPD's Homicide Unit is investigating. Fields is being held at Louisville Metro Corrections.
