LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- It was a violent Kentucky Derby weekend in Louisville with five people killed in shootings and stabbings around the city.

The first of the incidents happened early Saturday morning, when two people were killed in a triple shooting near the Kroger store on Broadway in west Louisville. On Monday morning, it was business as usual for shoppers, but one woman — who didn't want to be identified — said the large crowds that gathered that night in the parking lot before the shooting are nothing new.

"For years, there's always been issues, problems fights, thefts," she said. "The parking lots are packed from McDonald's to 26th, to Kroger. It's packed, but where are the officers at? Around here, I can tell you around 12 a.m. to 1p.m. is when the crowd gets bigger and everybody is out."

And then late Saturday, police said a man was stabbed to death on South 41st Street in the Shawnee neighborhood.

Just a couple hours later, LMPD said a one man was killed and another was injured in a shooting on University Boulevard, near Eastern Parkway, just off the University of Louisville campus.

And about an hour after that, police said they found a man shot and killed in his car on Dixie Highway near West Hill Street in the Algonquin neighborhood.

The woman at Kroger on Monday said she's grateful she wasn't caught in the crossfire.

"My reaction was like glad it wasn't me but, at the same, feeling like it shouldn't have happened," she said.

LMPD data still shows a 24% drop in metro homicides so far in 2025 compared to the same timeframe in 2024. The 40 criminal homicide deaths so far in 2025 are the lowest number since 38 in 2020, police say.

Police are also investigating two other shootings over the weekend that were non-fatal. A man was shot several times Sunday night in Fairdale, and there was a shooting early Monday morning in the parking garage of Brown Hotel near downtown that left one man injured.

"Events such as the ones occurring this Derby Weekend are a tragic reminder of the impact violence has on our community," LMPD said in a written statement. "Our Officers and Detectives remain committed to combatting this violent crime and pursuing justice for those who have fallen victim to it. "
