LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A second grader from Adair County died in a DUI crash that led to two arrests over the weekend, according to LEX18.Ā

According to KSP, 46-year-old Joel Hammack of Crossville, Tennessee, was driving south on KY 55 Bypass in a Ford F150 and was speeding.Ā Hammack then came upon a "slower-moving" Kia Sorento. Hammack rear-ended the car and the crash caused the Sorento off the roadway and it overturned.

A child in the Kia Sorento died on the scene andĀ a 66-year-old woman and another juvenile were taken to the hospital with "serious injuries."

Jason Faulkner, the superintendent for Adair County Public Schools, said the child killed in the crash was a second grade student, according to LEX18.Ā

"There’s no time that this is going to be, that this is easy, but given the fact that this is the holiday season adds another layer of difficulty to this," Faulkner said to LEX18. "I would just plead with our community, give this family a little bit of space. Let them mourn, let them grieve."

Hammack had a passenger in his truck, 45-year-old Walter Nichols.Ā KSP said Hammack was arrested and charged with vehicular homicide under the influence of alcohol, DUI 4th offense or greater, and three counts of assault.

When first responders arrived on scene, Nichols was "unruly" and then arrested and charged with assault 3rd degree (EMS, Fire, Rescue Squad), assault 4th degree (minor injury), terroristic threatening, disorderly conduct and alcohol intoxication in a public place, according to KSP.

Both Hammack and Nichols were taken to the Adair County Detention Center. Hammack's bond was set at $1 million.
