LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A Louisville man was arrested Tuesday night following a fatal hit-and-run crash near Churchill Downs.
Police arrested Johnny Merriweather, 67, after using Flock cameras to identify his license plate from surveillance footage.
Louisville Metro Police responded around 8:37 p.m. March 27 to a report of a pedestrian hit near Southern Parkway and West Evelyn Avenue, which is close to Churchill Downs.
Officers found an adult man unconscious in the roadway. Investigators said the man was walking in the area when a vehicle hit him and left before officers arrived.
Police and EMS performed life-saving measures, but the man was pronounced dead.
According to Merriweather's arrest citation, a witness told police the vehicle was an older white pickup truck. Police discovered his license plate from surveillance footage and went to the listed address on the registration.
Police found the truck parked in the driveway with front end damage consistent with a pedestrian strike.
Merriweather admitted to police that he believed he hit someone on the night of the crash.
He is being charged with leaving the scene of an accident and failure to render aid with death or serious physical injury.
Merriweather appeared in court Wednesday morning for his arraignment, where he pleaded not guilty and a judge set his bond at $10,000 cash.
