LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Police said an 11-year-old girl was distraught and her hands were covered with her mother's blood at a crime scene in southern Indiana.

Jurors heard from the first officers on the scene in the murder trial of Mac Lewis as Wednesday was day two of the murder trial at the Clark County Courthouse.

Lewis is accused of killing his wife, Elizabeth Bennett Lewis, in front of her 11-year-old daughter.

"Those witnesses included the police officers who placed Mac Lewis under arrest after he had left the scene," Clark County Prosecutor Jeremy Mull said.

Lewis is accused of shooting his wife to death inside their home in Sellersburg in April 2022.

"The witnesses included the first responders at the house after the little girl had called 911," Mull said.

On Tuesday, jurors heard the emotional 911 call from the victim's 11-year-old daughter and Wednesday, an officer shared details of what he encountered when he saw the little girl.

"She was shaking and just kept looking at her hands and shaking and EMS had to be contacted to come over and try to get the blood off her hands so that she could kind of stop being as upset as she was," Mull said.

Mitchell Harlan is one of the attorneys representing Lewis and believes the second day of testimony supports his client's version of what happened...that he pointed the gun at himself.

Mitchell said they heard the body cams of a couple of the officers.

"We feel like what he said there's really consistent with what we've thought all along that he was attempting to commit suicide," Mitchell said. "She came to prevent that and wrestled over the gun and the gun went off and then caused Lizzie's death."

Meanwhile, the defense still hasn't decided if Lewis will take the stand.

"Obviously, it's a decision that we will make together and of course, ultimately, its Mac's decision," Mitchell said.

Whether Lewis takes the stand or doesn't, you can expect the victim's family and friends to continue to pack the courtroom.

"What they've asked me to do is just between now and the verdict ... let everyone know that has been supportive of them," attorney for the victim's family, Larry Wilder, said. "They appreciate it. And you can see the number of people that are in that courtroom to watch this process work its way out."

The victim's daughter is expected to take the stand later this week.
