LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A 12-year-old boy was taken to the hospital after being shot in Louisville's Portland neighborhood Monday morning.

According to LMPD spokesman John Bradley, officers responded to a ShotSpotter call around 3:45 a.m. in the 2100 block of Bank Street.

When they arrived, they found evidence of a shooting and a boy who had been shot.

He was taken to Norton Children's Hospital downtown for treatment of injuries that appear to be non-life threatening and the child is expected to make a full recovery, according to Bradley.

"I was asleep on the couch which is right inside that door there and I heard, like, 12 shots. It sounded like two different guns," said Crystal Froman who lives a few doors down from where the shooting happened. "I hear gunshots on a regular down there but usually not like that."

Community activist Christopher 2X said shootings involving children have increased – a concerning sign this latest case is so early in the year.

"You always have this caution mindset that when you hear something at the first of the year, what is the trend going to be like for the rest of the year," said 2X.

2X said the amount of young people being caught up in violent acts has increased since the pandemic.

"There has been, unfortunately, more juvenile activity in the city in the sense of this reckless gunplay issue," he said.

LMPD does not know if it was a targeted shooting.

LMPD's Non-Fatal-Shooting Unit is investigating the incident.
