LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Kentucky State Police released the names of the Nelson County sheriff's deputies who it said shot and killed an 80-year-old man dead after he pointed a gun at them during a traffic stop.

The shooting happened around 1:30 p.m. Jan. 7 at the Shell station at Bloomfield Road and Guthrie Drive, just east of downtown Bardstown.

The agency said Sgt. Lee Keith and Deputy Ryan Downs responded when an employee from the Nelson County Humane Society called 911 after "an individual became disorderly" and threatened them with a firearm.

That person was identified by KSP as Norman Perkins, of New Haven, Kentucky. Police said Perkins left the humane society and headed north on U.S. 31 East toward Bardstown. Deputies later caught up with Perkins and attempted a traffic stop, but Perkins "refused to yield," KSP said.

Perkins eventually pulled into the parking lot of the Speedy Mart on Bloomfield Road. Police said while deputies were trying to make contact with him, Perkins raised and pointed his firearm at them.

Keith and Downs fired their guns, hitting Perkins. He died from his injuries. No officers were injured.
