LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A Louisville man was in court Monday after a fatal crash on the Gene Snyder Freeway early Saturday morning.
Arnold Jose Quijada-Vega is facing numerous charges, including vehicular homicide while under the influence of alcohol, leaving the scene of an accident without rendering aid, tampering with physical evidence, operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol, reckless driving, and driving without a license or insurance.
The crash happened near the Bardstown Road exit on Interstate 265 around 4:20 a.m. Oct. 12. That's when police said Quijada-Vega rear-ended another car, causing it to swerve off the road and flip.
The 71-year-old driver of that car died at the scene.
Officers who responded to the crash found Quijada-Vega walking in the southbound lane of the interstate.
"He was obviously drunk" with blood on his face, according to the arrest citation. Police said Quijada-Vega told first told them he was the brother of the victim, and a passenger in the victim's vehicle. They searched Quijada-Vega and found that he "had stuffed in his pants the license plate" from the vehicle he was driving.
Quijada-Vega was unable to complete field sobriety tests at the scene.
A witness told investigators that she saw Quijada-Vega driving a white car that passed her in the fast lane, then cut over to the slow lane before rear-ending the victim's vehicle. She estimated he was traveling around 100 miles per hour.
A not guilty plea was entered on Quijada-Vega's behalf during his Oct. 12 court appearance. The judge set his bond at $500,000 full cash and ordered him to have no contact with the victim's family or witnesses.
His next court appearance is scheduled for Oct. 22.
