LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A man is dead after exchanging gunfire with a Shelby County sheriff's deputy, according to authorities.
The shooting happened about 12:50 am. Monday on Blackwell Road just north of Midland Trail in Shelbyville, according to Shelby County Coroner Jeff Ivers.
Ivers said the deputy responded to a domestic disturbance call at a home involving a man and his fiancé.
According to news release from Kentucky State Police, a Shelby County sheriff's deputy arrived at the home and found a man and woman outside. KSP said the man "retrieved a firearm and began firing the gun in the direction of the deputy." The deputy returned fire and killed the man. His body was found inside the garage.
Ivers identified the man as 41-year-old Ryan McBride. He lived in the home where the shooting took place.
During the exchange of gunfire, the deputy suffered a minor injury when a bullet hit a piece of his equipment. He was transported to a local hospital and was treated and released
Multiple neighbors told WDRB on Monday that they woke to the sound of gunfire.
"Definitely multiple shots and they were like back to back," Emily Liter said. "It sounded probably like three to five. It was fast enough to where I literally just thought it was someone banging on my door."
Liter said she saw the deputy after the shooting, and he was visibly shaken.
"He had his hands on his head, like he was obviously, like in distress, and he was freaking out. So like he was saying, Why, why? Why? And he was crying," she said.
Joseph Segretto, who lives nearby, said he heard between five and 10 gunshots. He said it was a scary and dramatic scene.
"You see him on the floor in his garage, obviously bleeding, officer crying and everything," Segretto said. "You got a lot more officers rolling up and running to the scene and stuff like that."
The Kentucky State Police Critical Incident Response Team is investigating, which is standard protocol in shootings involving law enforcement across the state. The deputy is on administrative leave during the investigation.
