LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A Louisville man arrested for a southern Indiana murder has been released after prosecutors uncovered an "elaborate plan" to frame him.
Nigel Thomas, 34, is now charged with murder in the April 14 death of Wilma Robertson, 35.
Robertson was found stabbed to death in her Hanover home by police conducting a welfare check.
Police previously arrested a Louisville man for the crime. But the charges against him have now been dismissed, and he has since been released from jail.
According to police, Thomas "engaged in an elaborate plan to frame" the man, going as far as creating social media accounts and sending messages to the victim's family admitting to the crime.
"The criminal justice system is ultimately a search for the truth," Jefferson County, Indiana, Prosecutor David Sutter said in a news release. "Multiple agencies across three states worked tirelessly in their pursuit of all investigative leads to uncover the crimes of Nigel Thomas, and clear (the man previously charged)."
Investigators point to new evidence in the case, including DNA that excluded the original suspect.
Thomas was arrested Friday in Ohio, and will be brought back to Indiana to face charges.
