LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Construction throughout Louisville's popular NuLu district continues, as businesses make plans for crowd for one of the area's biggest events.

NuLu Fest is Saturday, Sept. 28. More than 30,000 people will take part in the street festival in the East Market District, but the city is in the middle of a year-long $12 million dollar streetscape project focused on a one-mile stretch of East Market Street from Brook Street to Baxter Avenue.

Public works tells WDRB it schedules construction around big events like NuLu Fest, and construction in that area will be completed by the event. But the entire streetscape project won't be finished until next fall.

Over the last two decades, as the NuLu area has become a restaurant, tourist and shopping hub, not much has changed. Six lanes of traffic and parking, most of them pointing east, make the corridor conducive for vehicles, but it is not pedestrian-friendly.

Plans include extending some of the sidewalks, a dedicated cycling path, eliminating one driving lane and changing the parking pattern.
