LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Some Jefferson County Public Schools elementary students are celebrating Thanksgiving by helping people in need.

Students at Carter Traditional Elementary collected more than 2,000 canned goods and other food items, which were used to make more than 150 Thanksgiving baskets for families in need.

The goal was to teach students the true meaning of giving back.

"It's important to show the kids that not everybody has food for Thanksgiving, not everybody has items at the holidays, everybody has a different lifestyle so they get to be part of giving back to the community," Stephanie Link, Family Resource Center coordinator, said.

The classes that collected the most items took part in a "Turkey Bowl" on Friday, where students rolled a frozen turkey toward bowling pins. There was also a DJ and lots of dancing.
