LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Some of the best skilled Esport gamers around Louisville competed at Bellarmine University this weekend.
The second annual Bellarmine Esports Invitational brought gamers from 16 high schools around Kentucky. More than 100 gamers representing 29 teams competed in games like Super Smash Brothers Ultimate, Rocket League and Mario Kart 8.
Bellarmine is one of a small number of universities nationally that offer both competition and academic credit in Esports. The Esports management minor is the only esports academic credential in the state.
"We really believe that it's going to be a facet of sports administration degrees in the future, and we want to get ahead of the curve," said Mitch Greenwell, Bellarmine University director of Esports. "There are so many students that are passionate about esports that we think it's a no-brainer to give them opportunities to flex those muscles."
The competition continues on Sunday at Frazier Hall.
Esports is an official sport of the Kentucky High School Athletic Association.
