TARC bus facing JCPS Bus

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Jefferson County Public Schools officials said the district now has enough drivers from Louisville's public transportation agency to possibly restore bus routes that were cut.

Earlier this year, the district said it needed 68 drivers from the Transit Authority of River City licensed to drive school buses, and now it has that many, according to a news release sent Monday morning.

Driving a school bus requires a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) as well as a special "S" certification from the state of Kentucky. All TARC drivers have their CDLs, and, now, 68 have passed the testing to obtain the "S" certification.

TARC and JCPS reached an agreement in June for JCPS to hire TARC drivers who were losing their jobs.

Before routes can be restored, the JCPS Board of Education must approve it. JCPS transportation officials estimate it could take at least six weeks to ask magnet and traditional school families if they want bus service, reassign routes for bus drivers, and allow TARC drivers a chance to practice their routes.

The Board's next meeting is scheduled for Jan. 28.
