LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Thousands of Jefferson County Public School students are fighting the "summer slide" by keeping up their studies during summer break.
Gutermuth Elementary is one of 14 sites taking part in this year's Summer Backpack League. That's where middle and elementary students have been spending their time off, studying everything from reading to robotics. It's a great way to keep up with their courses.
"At first I was a little bit skeptical," 10-year-old James Ford said. "But now that I'm coming here and meeting everybody, it's actually really fun. It's not too hard, not too easy -- it's just right in the middle where I can handle everything."
James already has a passion for science, and told us the Backpack League is exactly where he wants to be this summer. He's one of about 6,500 students taking part in the program this summer.
Students in grades 1-8 who fell behind during the school year got priority registration, and JCPS then opened registration to other students.
JCPS leaders say it helps parents as much as the students, offering wraparound care with breakfast and lunch everyday while giving additional support and attention to students who may not get that attention during the school year.
JCPS executive director of extending programs and student learning Chris Burba said the goal is to increase student learning year-round, even in the summertime.
"We've offered lots of activities that will increase their engagement over the summer, give them learning activities so that when they return in the fall, they are ready for the new year," Burba said. "And we will see academic gains from our students."
July 12 is the last day for Summer Backpack League.
