LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Floyd County Commissioners have filed an application with the Indiana Department of Environmental Management to remove the Blackiston Mill Dam.
The commissioners voted to remove the dam last month after it failed in February, forcing the closure of the heavily-traveled Blackiston Mill Road Bridge connecting New Albany and Clarksville.
According to their application, they want to remove the dam over Silver Creek because its structure is compromised
The collapse redirected the water's course, forcefully eroding the embankment and compromising the stability of the bridge, which has remained closed since the dam failed.
Part of the project includes dismantling the damaged dam and redirecting the water's flow to prevent further erosion and allow stabilization efforts to begin, specifically, stabilizing the left descending streambank.Â
Commissioners said the project will help keep the public safe and allow the Blackiston Mill Road Bridge to be reopened. The entire process to remove the dam could take several months. Once the dam is cleared, county engineers must assess the bridge's structural integrity to determine if it is safe for traffic.
When voting to remove the dam last month, commissioners said if all goes according to plan, they want to start construction on a replacement bridge in early 2026.
A comment period on a replacement runs through May 28. Anyone can request that a public hearing be held on the proposed project.
