VALLEY STATION, Ky. (WDRB) -- Oliver Outdoors on Valley Station Road may look like just an archery business, but the owner is shooting for a goal of helping fellow neighbors.
Wanda Oliver and Crystal Fuchs didn't know each other before, but they sure do now. They're two of more than 14,000 members on the Facebook page "I am Dixie Highway." That page was started by a local couple.
"There are so many people that are working that just need a helping hand," Oliver said.
People post on the page about things going on in the community and when families are in need.
"From there, it just exploded," Fuchs said.
Fuchs and Oliver could not believe how in one day, so many people came together to help a family they didn't know. They say the father died recently, the mother couldn't work because of depression and she has two kids to feed at home.
"Once I got there last night with the donations from last night, it was amazing," Fuchs said. "It brought tears to her eyes, which brought so much joy to me, a community to come together like this is amazing."
The family's pantry is now full of food -- all from strangers connecting on the Facebook page.
"I went and picked up a $50 gift card from a lady," Oliver said. "I met her at Steak 'n Shake. She cleans two houses by herself and she got $50 from work and gave up her food money for the week to help this family."
Fuchs said on Dixie Highway, they take care of their own.
"I've seen a lady and two kids up at the store and need help," Fuchs said. "People will go up there and take them out to eat or people will put a family in a hotel and give the father a job. It's all the time."
People are continuing to come to Oliver Outdoors to bring donations for the latest family in need. The business is hoping to turn one room into a food bank so it can help people year round.
Oliver and Fuchs say no matter where you live in the Dixie Highway area, there are always new friends you can turn to, you just have to ask for help.
Oliver said it's a good feeling, "to know...when you go to sit to eat at the kitchen table with your family...to know that family tonight is getting to eat too."
