LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Senate Bill 11, authored by Republican Sen. Michael Young, would let death row inmates request a firing squad if lethal injection is unavailable.

The bill’s first reading is expected Monday, and it is likely to be referred to the Committee on Corrections and Criminal Law, as reported by FOX59.

Since Indiana resumed capital punishment in 2024, three people have been executed, including Roy Lee Ward, who was put to death by lethal injection in Michigan City on Oct. 10.

If passed, the law would take effect July 1, 2026. The squad would consist of five correction officers, four firing live rounds and one firing a blank round to maintain anonymity. Identities of those involved would remain confidential.

Five inmates currently remain on Indiana’s death row.
