LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The Indiana Department of Transportation is warning people of a toll-related text scam.
INDOT said the scam is targeting Hoosiers statewide with fake messages that appear to come from INDOT or tolling service providers alerting people of a final notice for unpaid tolls. The texts mention additional fines, late fees, suspension of vehicle registration and further legal action.
It also includes a link for payment.
INDOT said it will never notify drivers of unpaid tolls through text message.
"INDOT does not and will not notify drivers of unpaid tolls via text message," Natalie Garrett, strategic communications director for INDOT, said in a news release Monday. "We urge members of the public to exercise extreme caution before opening suspicious links. The best thing to do is delete these messages."
