LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The IRONMAN 70.3 Louisville race will be on hold starting in 2026 as extensive road and highway improvements in Jefferson County affect the course.

The Louisville Sports Commission said it fully supports the decision.

"Our hope is to return in the future when conditions allow," the commission wrote on Facebook, thanking athletes, volunteers and the community for their support over the years.

Greg Fante, president and CEO of the Louisville Sports Commission, said the pause was necessary but emphasized the city's commitment to the event.

"We are proud of our partnership with IRONMAN and fully support this decision as Louisville undergoes major infrastructure improvements," he said. "We look forward to the event's return and to once again showcasing our city to athletes from around the world."

The 70.3-mile triathlon has drawn competitors from across the country in past years. Organizers said they hope to bring the race back once construction and road conditions make the course safe and feasible.
