LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- IRONMAN says the swim portion of its race Sunday in Louisville is still on even though there are reports of toxic algae in the Ohio River.
The state issued an advisory about the algae last week.
They said coming in contact with the water could cause skin irritation, vomiting and even diarrhea.
IRONMAN originally said it's monitoring water samples from where athletes are supposed to swim Sunday.Â
As of right now, race organizers said the swim is still going to happen.Â
Triathletes taking part in IRONMAN Louisville are supposed to swim downstream through part of the Ohio River next Sunday before hitting the Great Lawn in Waterfront Park for the 56-mile bike course and 13.1-mile run.
The course will spread across the southern Indiana, Louisville's waterfront and Oldham County.
A similar situation happened in 2019 when the IRONMAN was in Louisville. Then, the swim was canceled for that same toxic algae.
