LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A community is coming together to honor two young boys were were shot and killed Wednesday morning in Bullitt County.

Six-year-old Maurice Baker Jr. and 9-year-old Jayden Howard died at Norton Children's Hospital.

According to the Bullitt County Sheriff's Office, the shooting happened just after 11 a.m. in the 200 block of Bentwood Drive in a residential area near Shepherdsville. Police said a neighbor found the children inside the home.

Both boys were taken by ambulance to Norton Children's Hospital with a police escort, where they later died.

Since then, a memorial has grown on the front lawn of their home. People have dropped off balloons, candles, flowers, and teddy bears. Others stopped by to pray for the family.

"We stand together and we lock hands and support each other, and love each other instead of hurting each other," said Lisa Flint. "There's enough going on in this world."

On top of the growing memorial at the home, the community is holding a vigil to remember the young brothers.

"These children missed out on so much, and it hurts," said Flint, who is helping to organize the vigil. "It hurts bad, not just for me but for everyone."

While the vigil's organizers didn't know the boys, they feel it's a tragedy that impacts their whole community.

"I've heard that they were full of life. They were fun and they were both good boys and they loved to be active," Lori Jessie, who is also helping to organize the vigil, said.

The vigil is being held at Little Flock Baptist Church in Shepherdsville this Sunday, Nov. 12, at 5 p.m.

"There's no doubt, you know? You know they didn't deserve this and we want to be able to do this with the community, for the community to keep their spirits alive," Jessie said.

There will be candles, speeches, and a DJ. People are encouraged to bring posters and signs to honor the boys.

"Those babies need a voice besides their family. Their family needs help, and support, those babies need to be honored," said Flint.

The boys' mother, 32-year-old Tiffanie Lucas, was arrested Wednesday afternoon following the shooting. According to her arrest citation, a witness at the scene told police Lucas shot the boys.

She's charged with two counts of murder, though police have released few details on what actually happened.

Lucas made her first court appearance via video conference Thursday morning, where a judge set her bond at $2 million. She's due back in court next week.
