LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is urging families to prioritize gun safety following the accidental shooting death of a teenager.
The shooting happened around 2:30 p.m. Tuesday near Greenwood Avenue and Dr. W. J. Hodge Street, according to authorities.
Louisville Metro Police responded and said a 14-year-old boy accidentally shot himself. He was taken to a hospital, where he later died.
In response, the sheriff’s office is renewing its push for firearm safety and secure storage, particularly in homes with children. Officials said children are naturally curious and may not fully understand the dangers firearms pose.
The sheriff’s office has released a gun safety pamphlet aimed at educating young people and families about what to do if they encounter a gun.
The guide tells children never to touch a firearm and to leave the area immediately and notify an adult. It also explains that real guns are dangerous and should not be confused with those depicted in television shows or movies.
The sheriff’s office said gun owners should always store firearms securely and keep them inaccessible to children to help prevent similar tragedies.
