LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Kentucky is adding a new permit requirement for people who use shooting ranges managed by the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources.

The rule recently cleared the legislative approval process. Shooters must obtain either a one-day or annual range permit to use firearms or archery equipment at department-managed, leased or affiliated ranges across the state.

State wildlife officials said the permit system will help track range use, promote safety and support maintenance and future improvements.

The permit will be free for people 16 and older with a Kentucky hunting or fishing license, but it must still be selected separately in their license profile.

For people without a hunting or fishing license, the permit costs about $26 for an annual pass or just over $5 for a single day.
