KHS closes East Campus ahead of move to new facility off Preston Highway

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB/WAVE) — The Kentucky Humane Society ended adoptions at its East Campus on Sunday, the location's final day of operation.

Animals can still be adopted at the Kentucky Humane Society's location on Steedly Drive. The Sam Swope Pet Treatment and Lifesaving Center will remain open.

"It's been really encouraging to see so many animals go home in such a short period of time," said Emma Jewett with KHS. "The community has really stepped up and come to adopt. A lot of times, we have repeat adopters."

The new KHS Animal & Community Campus will be located on more than 5 acres of land on Orchard Avenue, off Preston Highway. It will replace the nonprofit's current facilities.

The plans call for a 54,000-square-foot facility with 7,000 square feet of covered outdoor space.

Leaders said the new campus is "designed to save more lives, serve more families, and strengthen communities" across the city and state.

Services at the new clinic will include a low-cost veterinary clinic, a 30% increase in housing for cats and dogs and flexible emergency housing for animals rescued from large-scale cruelty or neglect cases, or natural disasters.

Additionally, KHS said the new campus will bring most staff and services under one roof "for the first time." It will also include public education spaces and community outreach rooms and resources, as well as an expanded CARE-a-van program to reach more communities.
