LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- As the temperatures drop and we celebrate the holidays, fire safety should be top of mind.
There are several common mistakes this time of year that can lead to a house fire.
Sgt. Loryn Baker, fire inspector for Louisville Fire, visited WDRB Mornings on Tuesday to discuss with us some things to keep in mind.
The leading cause of occupied home fires is cooking, and Thanksgiving is the leading day for cooking fires.
Baker emphasized to not use water on a grease fire, as it will make it worse. Also, keep pets and kids away from the stove.
"Make sure you keep a pan lid that fits over your pan while cooking," Baker said. "If a fire does spark up, just cover the pan with the lid and turn the heat off. That's the easiest way to put out the fire, don't throw something on it."
Another common thing that can be found in any home this time of year is a space heater.Â
When using one, make sure they are always plugged directly into the wall and not a power strip, and keep them away from anything that can catch on fire.
