LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Many property owners in Louisville are bracing for sticker shock when new tax assessments are posted Friday on Jefferson County's PVA website.
The office began mailing more than 90,000 notices to homeowners in Louisville neighborhoods stretching from Butchertown to Fisherville. The reassessments are required by law.
PVA officials have said in the neighborhoods getting reassessed, home values reflect an overall increase of $5.9 billion. However, homeowners can appeal the new assessment if they don't think it's correct.

If you think your tax bill is too high, there's a process to dispute it. The new values will be posted to the Jefferson PVA website at noon April 26. They will also be mailed out to homeowners. You have until May 20 to file an appeal.
The PVA office is already expecting thousands of appeals from homeowners once they receive their new assessments.
Jefferson County Property Valuation Administrator Colleen Younger said property owners have a good chance of winning an appeal.
"If you can substantiate what your opinion of value is, through interior photos, through an appraisal, through a bonified estimate of a contactor that outlines all of the needed repairs for your home and priced out ... you will most likely win," Younger sid.
Property taxes fund Jefferson County Public Schools, fire departments and city services.
Because the PVA expects so many appeals, it has extended the deadline to file until May 20, but you can't appeal until the assessments have been posted.
PVA officials will also be hosting sessions at area libraries where homeowners can ask questions and receive more input for their appeal.
