LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- LMPD is investigating after two drivers fled a crash scene in the eastbound lanes of I-264 early Tuesday morning.

LMPD spokesman Aaron Ellis said officers responded to a reported crash on I-264 eastbound at Dumesnil Street around 3:30 a.m.

When they arrived, they found two cars that had been involved in a crash.

Officers believe one of the vehicles was traveling on I-264 near the Dumesnil Street and Virginia Avenue off ramp when it was side-swiped by a wrong-way driver.

At the scene, officers were able to make contact with the man who was driving the wrong-way vehicle. He was alert and conscious, Ellis said.

Police then went to check on the other car, but found that it was empty.

While officers were checking on the other car, the initial driver of the wrong-way car fled the scene on foot in an unknown direction.

Ellis said as officers were trying to gather facts and information on what had happened, it was discovered that the car that was traveling the correct way had been reported stolen.

LMPD's Second Division is handling the ongoing investigation.
