LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A Louisville snow plow driver helped keep the city safe during last weekend’s snowstorm in more ways than one.
Louisville’s snow team has been working around the clock since the storm moved in.
“We're just out here doing our job and trying to keep the citizens of Louisville safe,” said snow team driver Zach Lewis.
As the snow fell hard Saturday, Lewis was driving a snow truck along Hikes Lane when a car slowly came to a stop in front of him. Lewis got out to check on the driver.
“Got out and knocked on the window and tried to get the attention of the gentleman... he was just unconscious,” Lewis said.
Lewis immediately called his route dispatcher, Clarissa Lamar.
Lamar says she immediately called 911.
“You have to get help there in an ample amount of time because every second counts,” Lamar said.
As EMS rushed to the scene, Lewis protected the driver from oncoming traffic.
“I moved my truck in a position to make the scene safe so he could not get hit,” Lewis said.
Lewis stood outside the car until help arrived. He tried to wake the man and directed traffic around the scene. When EMS arrived, the man was taken to the hospital.
Lewis does not view himself as a hero.
“I'm just out here doing my job,” he said.
He added that he hopes anyone else would have done the same thing.
Lamar said helping others became her life’s mission after a stranger’s 911 call saved her brother’s life.
“He's here today because somebody did call 911,” Lamar said.
Lamar believes everything happens for a reason and said things could have ended differently if the unconscious driver had stopped somewhere else.
“He was put in front of the right people to get him the help that he needed,” she said.
On a snowy Louisville street, those “right people” were already on the job.
“I'm meant to help people...I think this is just another one of those cases,” Lewis said.
WDRB has not received an update on how that man is doing.
