LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A lot of cats and kittens have found homes thanks to Louisville's Purrfect Day Cat Café. In fact, it's nearing 10,000 adoptions, which is more than anywhere else in the country, according to the Kentucky Humane Society.

It's easy to see why adoptions have been such a hit. Just a step inside makes it difficult to not to fall in love with a fuzzy friend to take home.

"Pure excitement. Oh my gosh," said Isa Valero, visiting the café.

Since Aug. 2018, Louisville's Purrfect Day Café on Bardstown Road has helped connect thousands of cats and kittens with forever homes.

"Everyone that comes to visit me, I always bring them here," said Trang Pham, a regular café visitor. She was there Friday with her cousins.

Purrfect Day's partnership with the Kentucky Humane Society has continued showing the need for this type of adoption accessibility.

"Never could we be able to adopt out an additional 1,700 cats and kittens a year without the help of this tertiary location here," said Andrea Mattingly with the Kentucky Humane Society.

In just six years, Purrfect Day's adoptions have now neared 10,000. It's a number Mattingly said far surpasses other cat cafés across the country.

"It is a national record. This is a huge deal," she said.

As of Friday afternoon, the café was at 9,935 adoptions.

Café owner Chuck Patton said he's thrilled with the success.

"When you start reaching these kind of numbers, it just truly becomes euphoric, humbling, to see how many people have been supportive of what we are doing here - more so than anywhere else in the country," he said.

While its cause for celebration for the cats, the Humane Society said it's always still looking for more people to come to its shelters for dog adoptions, too.

Metro Animal Services said overcrowding forced staff members to put several dogs down recently to make room for new strays, but it said dog adoptions increased in July, and it's working to get every animal into a loving home.

"If you're adopting from Metro Animal Services, you're also helping out the Kentucky Humane Society you're helping make room for a pet," Mattingly said. "It really is going to rely on the community to come out and adopt in order to make space for those dogs to have a home."

The Purrfect Day Café said on weekends it's averaging 10 to 15 adoptions per day, and with more than 9,900 adoptions and counting -- that 10,000 mark could come pretty soon.

"I had no idea that we could go from an objective of 300 (adoptions) to all the way up to 1,700 per year every single year that we've done this," said Patton.

He said he's also thankful for the families and individuals who have made this possible by adopting a cat or kitten.

"I think it's amazing," said Pham.
