MADISON, Ind. (WDRB) -- After extensive construction, the city pool in Madison, Indiana is scheduled to reopen for the 2024 summer swimming season.
According to the city, Crystal Beach Swimming Pool was built in the 1930s. It sits near the river in Madison's historic downtown area as a popular spot for families to spend summer days, but it's been closed since mid-2022.
Crews found extensive damage to the pool's structure after the liner was removed in January of 2022, including crumbling concrete and filters that failed pressure tests.

In Feb. 2023, the city announced a $2 million grant from the Bethany Legacy Foundation for the rehabilitation of Crystal Beach.
According to a release from the city, the grant, along with other funding, "... will be used to complete the demolition and rebuild of the new pool into an aquatic park that will include interactive water features for young children, a lazy river, two lap lanes, diving board, a wet deck, new slides, and chairs and umbrellas. A portion of the Bethany Legacy Foundation grant will be specifically set aside to support access to the aquatic park and swim lessons for families in need."
