LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville police are investigating a homicide after a man was found dead near Petersburg Park in the Newburg neighborhood.
Louisville Metro Police spokesperson John Bradley said officers responded just after 11:30 a.m. to the intersection of East Indian Trail and Petersburg Road just before noon Monday.
He said said officers responded to "undoubtedly deceased" man suffering from "traumatic wounds of some nature." Police said the body of a Hispanic man in his 20s was found in a wooded area near the intersection.
"It was a call that came in from a passerby saying that they located or saw a subject in the wooded area that was unresponsive," LMPD 6th Division Maj. Mindy Vance said. "All I'll say at this time is that the injuries are consistent with a criminal homicide. So it's not a natural death."
Sherri Dunn, who was traveling through the area Monday, said she often walks in Petersburg Park.
"Even though I don't live in this neighborhood, I still come back to walk," she said. "It's been a very safe place to walk, but to have this type of situation happen right here, that's real close."
The LMPD Homicide Unit is investigating the case, police said, but there are no suspects.
"Any time there's an incident like this, there's a canvassing in the neighborhood, looking over at the crime scene, stuff like that," Vance said. "So that's why everything's taped off again. They're looking for any leads or any kind of possible evidence left behind."
Dunn believes it was probably an isolated incident but still has questions.
"So this one isolated incident is a human being that had a right to live, and I think they said that he was a younger man ..." she said. "I do want to know what happened."
