LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A Louisville man has been sentenced to 30 years in federal prison for the murder of a community activist in 2020.

Ashton Clay Nally, 23, was sentenced for the carjacking and murder of Travis Nagdy.

Nagdy was a community activist known for speaking out against gun violence and leading protests in the city following the death of Breonna Taylor.

The shooting happened just after midnight on Nov. 23 in the 2100 block of Crittenden Drive, near the University of Louisville campus. Prosecutors said Nally carjacked Nagdy before shooting him multiple times.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation arrested Nally in Madisonville, Kentucky, a few weeks later. Prosecutors said police used home security video, Nagdy's wrecked car and eyeglasses to find Nally.

According to court records, Nally confessed to killing Nagdy over text messages.

Nally also received five years of supervised release. There is no parole in the federal system.
