LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville has a new 25-foot tall sculpture that fits with one of the city's greatest traditions.
The Messenger: Time, a 25-foot tall, 38-foot long blue horse sculpture, was unveiled in the Portland neighborhood on Wednesday evening. The 3,300 pound steel sculpture was created by artist BK Adams.Â
Adams, a self-taught artist from Washington, D.C., hopes the sculpture inspires Louisville's younger generations.
"It speaks to being able to use your mind at a higher degree because I was able to design it from a vision and through my words, saying every day 'we can do it' and we never stopped going until it was complete," Adams said. "The kids need to understand how powerful their words are. What you say is what you'll produce, so it speaks to the kids."
The horse is draped with 130 clocks to symbolize the constant passage of time. There is more than 7,000 running feet of welds and a vibrant blue industrial car paint finish. It's now featured prominently at 2510 Portland Avenue outside of the Outsider Art Museum and Gallery.
Alex Huninghake, the executive director and curator of the museum, said the sculpture feels like it belongs.
"We're thrilled to have it," Huninghake said. "It's been a joy, people stop and stare and laugh. It's great."
The sculpture, designed in three parts, was transported from Miami to Louisville in a flat-bed truck. It's intended to embody the spirit of American manufacturing and question "who is selling us the dream now," according to the artist.
"The greatest tool was the words that we used, which brought it to materializing," Adams said.
The horse sculpture is visible on Portland Avenue and adds another public art display in the city.Â
"Public art adds so much to neighborhoods and this piece of art is wonderful. Its size, its color, it really adds some interesting new aspect of life to the neighborhood," Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg said. "Public art adds great life, it adds great character to neighborhoods so we're going to continue to support more public art around the city."
Outsider Art Museum partnered with the Claire Oliver Gallery to unveil the sculpture. Outsider Art Museum and Gallery opened last November.Â
