LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A new Waterfront Park playground in west Louisville is now complete and ready for residents to enjoy.

After 10 years of planning, officials officials held a ribbon-cutting ceremony March 26 at the new park. It's located on Rowan Street between 10th and 12th streets on the border of the Portland and Russell neighborhoods.

Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, along with local community leaders and residents, were there for the ceremony Wednesday morning.

The park is within walking distance for 10,000 west Louisville residents, with access to the new state-of-the-art PlayPort playground.

"We love it. We're definitely going to spend a lot of days here once it warms up," said Shavania Washington, who was visiting the park with her daughter. "It's really awesome. It's great."

The $15 million park expansion includes a classroom, meeting space, restrooms and a new parking lot. The playground equipment is all river- and construction-themed and will feature STEM-based experiences.

Officials broke ground on the property nearly three years ago after a cleanup of all the scrap metal and trash that once littered the area.

"To see it open to the public and hear the children's screams and see how much they are enjoying it, it is truly a moving experience," Waterfront Park Executive Director Deborah Bilitski said.

Along with education and fun, the park also has a focus on safety. Security cameras monitor the park, and Louisville Metro Police officers will also patrol nearby.

A new mural designed on the flood wall is expected to debut sometime this summer.
