NEW ALBANY, Ind. (WDRB) -- No serious injuries were reported after an apartment fire in southern Indiana late Wednesday night.
Firefighters were called to the Kingsfield Apartments in the 100 block of Mills Lane, off Green Valley Road, in New Albany around 9:30 p.m. Witnesses said the fire started in a downstairs unit and quickly spread throughout the complex. A post on the New Albany Fire Department's Facebook page said it crews arrived within three minutes to find heavy fire on all floors of the two-story building.
Paige Lewis said at first she didn't realize the building was on fire.
"I heard beating on the door and someone screaming and it sounded like they were calling somebody's name so I didn't get up immediately," she said. "But I heard them running to all the units so I peeked outside and I saw red flames. So I threw clothes on, I grabbed my cat, and ran out. And I couldn't grab anything else."
Other witnesses said they saw someone jump out of a second story window to escape the flames, and firefighters confirmed on Facebook that the resident was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
Multiple fire departments helped battle the flames, including companies from Clarksville, Jeffersonville, Highlander fire, and New Albany Township Fire assisted at the scene. Off-duty New Albany firefighters were also called in to man extra fire trucks. New Albany Police assisted at the scene by ensuring surrounding apartments were evacuated.
It's unclear how the fire that left 16 units damaged started. Floyd County Emergency Management, along with the Salvation Army and the Red Cross, are assisting the displaced families.
The State Fire Marshal is assisting the New Albany Department to determine the cause.
