LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A northern Kentucky man got an early Christmas present last month after investing $20 Kentucky Lottery scratch-off ticket at a local retailer and winning the top $1 million prize.Â
The man — who who wishes to remain anonymous — showed up at Kentucky Lottery headquarters Dec. 23 to claim his prize after buying a Casino Nights scratch-off ticket with a top prize of $1 million the night before in Alexandria.
The lucky winner had stropped at Alexandria Carryout, where he bought the winning ticket, after winning on another scratch-off.
"I bought four different tickets," he said.
The man took scanned the ticket at vending machine, and it revealed a $700,000 (cash) payout, but he said he scanned it three more times to be sure.
"I thought, well, how many zeros does it have?" he told lottery officials.
The man, in disbelief, called for the store clerk: "I said, 'Can you come over and look at this?'"
The Campbell County man said his mother and daughter didn't believe him at first.Â
"My daughter had a million questions," he said.
He decided to take a lump sum cash payment of $700,000, which amounted to $504,000 after taxes. He could have chosen to receive $50,000 a year for 20 years.Â
The man told lottery officials that, besides giving money to his kids and buying a condo for his mom, he has no plans right now for himself.
Alexandria Carryout will receive $7,000 for selling the winning ticket.
