The cash option for a single winning ticket is an estimated $452.2 million.

If no one hits Friday's jackpot, it will grow. The next drawing is scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 18, at 11 p.m.

The odds of winning the Mega Millions jackpot are 1 in 302,575,350, while the odds of winning any Mega Millions prize are 1 in 24, according to lottery officials.

The jackpot grew after no one hit the jackpot Tuesday, reaching nearly a billion dollars for the eighth time in the game's history. In the Nov. 11 drawing, there were 809,030 winnings tickets across all the non-jackpot prize levels.

The $980 million payout is for a winner who opts for an annuity, doled out over 30 years. Winners usually prefer a lump sum option, which for Tuesday would be about $452.2 million.

A big slice of those winnings would go toward federal taxes, and many states also tax lottery payouts.

Mega Millions tickets are sold in 45 states, Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Tickets are $2 each; in most jurisdictions, players can add the Megaplier for an additional $1 to multiply their non-jackpot prizes. Half of the proceeds from the sale of each Mega Millions ticket remains in the state where the ticket was sold to support causes and retailer commissions. Drawings are conducted at 11 p.m. Eastern Time on Tuesdays and Fridays in Atlanta, Georgia.
