LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Outside the Buechel Fire Department an American flag flies at half staff. Inside it's eerily quiet.
"We're just kind of in silent mode right now," said spokesman, Jordan Yuodis.
Volunteer Firefighter Joe Dosker's helmet still sits on top of his locker like nothing happened. "The mood is, where do we go from here?" explained Yuodis.
Dosker will never wear that helmet again. He'll never step back onto another fire truck.Ā
The 29-year-old was behind the wheel of an SUV that crashed into the back of a semi on Buechel Bank Road, near GE's Appliance Park. It ended up wedged underneath. Investigators still are not sure why.
"We're trained to go to emergencies, but when the emergency is one of your own, it was like making a run on your family member," Yuodis said.
Dosker was more than a firefighter. He was also an EMT, veteran, and friend.
"You know he was a joy to be around, he was funny as all get out," Yuodis explained.
It makes losing him that much harder. Goodbyes are never easy, but Buechel firefighters will deal with it the only way they know how.
"For us, getting back on the rig and answering the next call is how we cope," Yuodis said.
The fire department has counselors and chaplins that will help Joe's friends and co-workers through this dark time. Police say the driver of the semi will not face any charges.
