LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville is hosting the Annual Wheelchair Rugby Invitational this weekend, organized by the Paralyzed Veterans of America.

The event is being held at the Kentucky International Convention Center from Jan. 30 to Feb. 1, with 20 teams from across the country competing in three divisions.

From the opening games, athletes demonstrated speed, skill and teamwork, with every play important as teams competed within their divisions.

The first day of competition showcased the power, focus and determination behind one of adaptive sports’ most physical competitions.

"Wheelchair rugby is a hard-hitting, fast-paced sport designed for athletes with disabilities affecting all four limbs, such as quadriplegia. The combination of strategy and physicality makes it an exciting sport for both players and spectators," according to the Paralyzed Veterans of America.

The invitational continues through Feb. 1, bringing wheelchair rugby action to Louisville. To learn more, visit the Paralyzed Veterans of America website.
