LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A bill aimed at cracking down on drivers who illegally pass stopped school buses is headed to the governor’s desk.
House Bill 7, which passed Tuesday, will allow school districts to use school bus video as evidence to enforce civil penalties against cars that are recorded passing a school bus with a deployed stop arm.
Law enforcement could review that video and issue citations, holding drivers accountable for dangerous behavior around school buses.
The bill also allows districts to partner with private companies to install and manage the camera systems.
Drivers caught violating the law would face a $300 fine for a first offense and $500 for repeat offenses within three years.
To address privacy concerns, cameras would only record when a bus’s stop arm is deployed, and access to footage would be limited.
The bill passed both the state House and the Senate, and now awaits the governor's signature to become law.
