LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A bill passed the House Education Committee on Tuesday in Frankfort aimed at cracking down on teenagers vaping at school.
House Bill 142 would ban all tobacco, alternative nicotine and vape products in Kentucky's public schools. The bills would require districts to create a plan to punish students and take the products away.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released a new report saying about 2.8 million kids and young adults currently use tobacco products. Among middle school students, tobacco use increased by nearly 50% from 2022 to 2023.
Last year, Hardin County Schools, LaRue County Schools and Elizabethtown Independent Schools sent out a letter asking businesses to obey the laws of selling vape products and keeping them behind the counter.
HB 142 now moves on to the full House.
