LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- It was a special moment of gratitude Sunday as Fern Creek's Fire and EMS chief retired.

After 50 years of service, Deputy Chief Robert Storrie is wrapping up his time with the department. He was chief officer for 35 years. That is a rare accomplishment, especially as a volunteer.

A celebration was held Sunday at the regional training academy on Fairmount Road.

Friends, co-workers, and family took moments to say thank you and Storrie says he is grateful to have served the community for so long.

"Well, it is pretty incredible,"Ā Storrie said.Ā "When I started 50 years ago I had no idea this was coming. It was like you just go at it one day at a time but now that it is towards the end I am very appreciative and thankful."

Storrie says he now plans on spending lots of time with his six grandkids but does plan on popping by the station every now and then to say hi.
